“Yeh dosti, hum nahi todenge,
Todenge dum agar, tera saath na chhodenge…”
Why Friendships Matter
Friendships are important because they create a beautiful connection that gives people happiness and nourishment in the form of prosperity, hope, and contentment. Even if friendships cannot be summed up or commemorated by a single day, it can serve as motivation to get in touch with a friend you may not have spoken to in a while in order to recall and reignite the love and connection you once shared.
Binge-watching movies together and forgetting to wake up the next day for school had to be a part of the glorious school life. Playing games like stone, paper, scissors, or FLAMES (just to find out whether you can get a chance to match with your forever crush) was a must.
“Yaaron, dosti, badi hi haseen hai,
Yeh na ho toh kya fir, bolo yeh zindagi hai…”
The song used to get us all emotional during the farewell. Though we knew we were friends forever, yet a drop or two rolled down the smiling faces. After 10 years, when you still watch these movies, or listen to these songs, and think of the same group, maybe you will realize you haven’t talked to them for a while due to the daily hustle. Well, Friendship Day is here to pull you up and motivate you to give a call to the gang or send a “Hey! Let’s meet this weekend” text. The day also gives you a reason to visit your best friend’s place which used to be your second home, or whose mom has literally adopted you as her own. Or maybe, you can visit your school and sit on the benches where you all left your names scratched underneath.
Reliving School Memories and Those Iconic Friendship Moments
Recalling school memories also takes us back to the discussions where we could relate ourselves and our friendship with the most trending movies. The iconic pair of Jay-Veeru can be found in two of chuddy buddies- who have been friends since kindergarten and whose mother loves the other one more than or just like her own son. The famous and the most mischievous trio of the school- Rancho, Raju, Farhan– don’t be fooled if they call their group “3 Idiots”, they will steal the top ranks of the exams. For the giggling pair of besties, who are the musketeers and confidantes of each other, the Naina and Aditi save each other from getting caught while going to parties and post the perfect #yehjawaanihaideewani teenage photos. And, of course, the last benchers- Kabir, Arjun, Imran, who spent every school day as zindagi na milegi dobara.
“Yaado ke purane album mein
Chhupa ke rakhe hai humne woh din
Na kisi manjil ki fikar thi
Zindagi jeene ki umar thi
Dosti aur doston se udhar ke din he
Woh din bhi kya din the…”
Most of the time, savoring the present does not come from being in it; rather, it comes from thinking about it. Even if you might not be able to see or meet your friends on this International Friendship Day, use the occasion to reflect on the times you did.
If your dil Chahta hai to go back and relive these days, I bet there’s no better opportunity than friendship day. Find your new #friendshipgoals by reuniting with your squad in person or maybe a Skype call! Well, don’t forget the ritual, to click quirky screenshots of your friends from the video call and post them.
Take Time to Reconnect and Reminisce
Friendships often shift as everyone follows their own paths. If you still want to celebrate Friendship Day, even from afar, there are simple ways to send love to your friends. You could send cards, tie friendship bands, or keep up other childhood traditions. Adulthood also offers chances to plan a house party or gather the gang for a night of memories. Binge-watching classic movies together is another fun option. Or, share a social media post with a caption recalling the time you both got home late and covered for each other, or when you twinned in matching outfits.
And if you are successful in getting a leave for a few days, aligned with those of your besties, knock knock! A road trip is awaiting. It’s time to finally go with the long-awaited Goa trip plan.
Friendship Day doesn’t have any traditional manner of celebration. But whichever you choose to do for your dear friend/friends, live the moment to the fullest so that when you will look back and converse about it, the memory should bring a bright ‘n wide smile.
